Note - OPS and By-Law services base their work on call statistics. The more calls you make, the more neighbourhood services you get.
Three steps to making the "right call": 1) Review the list above and ensure you call the appropriate number. If you have an emergency, or see a crime in progress (ie: robbery, fight in progress, accident w/ injuries), call 911. If you witnessed a drug deal, or need police to attend another non-urgent situation (minor accident, intoxicated person, aggressive pan handler), please call the "other emergencies" number (613-236-6211). Call 3-1-1 for all by-law and City related matters (property standards, parking, parks, graffiti, etc). 2) Getting a report number. When the dispatcher answers, it is a good idea to ask for a report number immediately. Dispatchers are busy and can forget to give the report number. Asking for a report number right away solves these problems. 3) Share information with your neighbours. Please e-mail your report numbers and a brief description of the incident to your Block Captain (if you have one), or directly to your neighbourhood watch coordinator who will in turn send info to the local CPC officer, if necessary.
Prostitution: Community Safety Letters ('Dear john' letters) will only be sent to johns who have been observed soliciting prostitution by Police, but having a good list of plates and known vehicles to watch out for is be a big help.Neighbourhood Watch members can support the police by writing down and phoning in important information such as: vehicle descriptions and license plate numbers (specify Ontario or Quebec) of anyone soliciting prostitutes (johns), descriptions of drug dealers and addresses of crack houses. Drug Dealers: The Street Crimes Unit targets drug dealers. Undercover officers buy drugs and then arrest the dealers. You can help this unit by noting the location, time of day, and physical description of dealers. You can send this information to your neighbourhood watch coordinator or directly to me. Crack Houses:If you suspect crack house activity in your area, please call your local district police at their extension (Ext 5766 for D-23 CW office). Let other neighbours know as well, especially your neighbour watch coordinator, or block captain. Crack houses can take a long time to shut down and require a coordinated effort from you, the police and the landlord, but the problem will become worse if it is not dealt with swiftly. If you do not want to draw attention to yourself, you can specify that you do not want an officer attending your door when you call police. You can, in non-emergency cases, leave a message with me (and advise me that you don't want an officer showing up at your door) or you can also call Crime Stoppers at 613-233-TIPS (8477).
